Sam’s Show Notes for RSDOI Episode 4 "The only thing that is guaranteed is the work."
To start you off, here is the NPR article that Johnny and I referenced a couple of times in the Episode 4. No exaggeration, it really changed the way I interacted with my students. Totally worth the time to read it.
Despite working off of some pretty shaky and inconsistent definitions of risk taking, fear, and failure, I think my head got to a good place in this episode. Taking all of those words out of it and just focusing on "The only thing that is guaranteed is the work” is great long term approach to teaching about achievement as well as all the risk taking, fear, and failure wrapped up in the pursuit. That’s something I can follow.
I’m still conflicted about the risk assessment element. There’s no simple answer. Sons do things that can cause injury. Sometimes we are there to mitigate the damage to a level appropriate for learning. Inevitably we won’t be there at some point. I’m not the helicopter/lawnmower type but I’m also rather certain I don’t have have teaching risk assessment nailed down.
