Sam’s Show Notes for RSDOI Episode 3 "I know you use this to clean dishes. I'm gonna cook a fish in it."

I think this is the first time I have vocalized that my son will engage in competitive activity, in collaborative activity, in independent activity. That feels important to me. Three episodes in and I’m already worried that the listener/reader is going to get sick of this notion, but I’m learning which is why I got into this.

I’m pretty sure Johnny and I remain on different pages regarding not just the merit of competition, but on the definition and execution of competition. I’d like to think I have this enlightened vision of competition. Our conversation made me reevaluate it. It also made me think even if I adhere to my convictions a lot of other voices are going to be telling my son a different story.

Battle worth fighting?

If so, how do I fight it?

Part of learning is generating more questions.

Also, the guy who won the cash prize and took the money home instead of buying pizza for every one could have been me. I used to drive 4 hours, round trip, to go to the event Johnny and I talked about. It was on a Tuesday night. I’d usually make it back home by midnight and have to teach on Wednesday so I never stuck around long enough to even know that this pizza thing was happening. Pretty sure I used the prize money for gas. Sorry Start City Slam fam. I didn’t know. Next time pizza is on me.
